Remove location metadata from iPhone photos before sharing

What photo metadata can contain

People often use “EXIF” as shorthand, although an image can use several metadata formats. Apple Photos can show the capture date and time, filename, iPhone model, camera settings, and a map when location is present. Other files may include editing software or orientation information.

Not every photo contains every field. Location depends on Camera access to Location Services, and editing or sharing can change the file.

1. Open the photo in Photos.
2. Swipe up or tap the Info button.
3. Review the map, date and time, device, and camera information shown.

Remove location from a saved photo

1. Open the photo.
2. Tap the More button.
3. Choose Adjust Location.
4. Choose No Location.

Apple also supports changing location for a batch of selected photos. Removing location does not necessarily remove every other metadata field.

Turn off Location for one share

1. Open or select the photo in Photos.
2. Tap Share, then Options.
3. Turn off Location and tap Done.
4. Choose the sharing destination.

Apple notes that “All Photos Data,” available for AirDrop and iCloud links, can include the original file, edit history, and metadata. Check that option when you want the opposite: a minimal share copy.

Do not depend on every destination behaving the same way

Some services re-encode uploads and some sharing paths send a file closer to the original. Behavior can differ by service, format, feature, and version. Preparing the file before choosing the destination gives you a clearer baseline than assuming Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, Messages, email, AirDrop, and cloud storage all make the same choice.

What a Safe Little Faces export does

Safe Little Faces creates a new JPEG or PNG and does not copy source GPS, capture date, camera, lens, device, or similar identifying fields. It keeps technical fields needed to display the exported image, such as dimensions, format, color information, and upright orientation.

Stop Camera from collecting location for future photos

Apple’s current path is Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera > Never. That affects location collection by Camera and may remove location-based organization you use in Photos, so choose it deliberately.

A practical verification routine

1. Prepare or export the share copy.
2. Open that copy in Photos and inspect Info.
3. Zoom into the full frame for visible clues.
4. Check the caption and audience.
5. Share the verified copy instead of the original.
